Volunteer Opportunity with the Special Olympics

Note from the East Tennessee Special Olympics Coordinator...

I'm looking for at least 2 people to help referee the Special Olympics Regional Flag Football event on Sept. 11 at Mayor Bob Leonard Park in Farragut. We have 9 high school and adult teams registered to participate. The entire event will be from 10:00 am - approximately 3:00 pm. If someone is only available in the morning or afternoon we could use you, but I am particularly looking for assistance in the afternoon. Since flag football is a new sport for Special Olympics, the morning will be conducted as scrimmages with the emphasis on training rather than competition. In the afternoon, teams will be divisioned and play actual games.

We have a lead referee for each field but the expected assistance has not materialized. Even if you are not a referee but have played flag football, understand the general rules, and are willing to help out, I'd like to hear from you. If you haven't played flag football but understand football, can move up and down the field with the play, and are interested I'll send you the rules so you can look them over and decide if you can help.

Special Olympics plays 5 on 5 and uses a 40 x 25 yd. field, plus the end zones.

If you can help, please let me know.  Even if you can't volunteer for the event, come out and support the athletes on September 11.

Terry

Women's Equality Day and League of Women Voters 90th Birthday

Relive the Celebration! Invitation from Jamey Dobbs, President of League of Women Voters Knoxville-Knox County...

We invite you to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and the League’s 90th birthday in a special joint presentation on Saturday, August 7 from 10:30-12:00 noon at Market Square in downtown Knoxville. It's a perfect time to bring your mom, your daughter, your neighbor's daughter, a girlfriend, or grandmother to celebrate and share our exciting history. Afterward, have lunch together and enjoy more activities in the afternoon as part of the East Tennessee History Fair in neighboring Krutch Park. We invite you to wear white in the spirit of our celebration, or come in period-style costume for our contest, or just come as you are!

Woman's Suffrage Coalition leader Wanda Sobieski, and League of Women Voters president, Jamey Dobbs will kick off the event at 10:30 on Market Square stage.

We will have ample seating in front of the stage. For this event, the Coalition is sponsoring a new musical play by Candace Corrigan – the Nashville producer of the movie, “How Southern Women Won the Vote. Corrigan’s new play, "A Vote of Her Own", brings the three Tennessee suffragists in the Suffrage Memorial Statue on Market Square to life, with dialogue taken from their own witty, entertaining, and bold writings, much of it set to original music. The 20 minute musical play will be performed at 11:20, 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm (the 2:00 performance takes place at the Krutch Park music stage). Prior to the play, members of the League will announce the winner of the new Making Democracy Work award, given to a nominee who shares the suffragists’ commitment of strengthening democracy in our own community.

After the play, we will give a prize for the best-dressed suffragist and share a large birthday cake and lemonade. After lunch, visit the League and Suffrage Coalition booth in Krutch Park, with a living "tableau" of suffragists who were jailed for their beliefs will talk to visitors behind bars. Young students will be "living statues," who come alive to tell you the story of a famous character in the Suffrage Movement. You can also have your photo taken with a wonderful re-enactor of the famous suffragist and lawyer, Inez Millholland (profile here), who dressed as Joan of Arc while leading a parade on Washington, and helped win legal battles on the way to the vote.

At 3:30 pm, see a showing of Candace Corrigan’s How Southern Women Won the Vote inside the East Tennessee History Center. This is the musical movie donated to all Knox County public schools and libraries, along with a free curriculum, by the League of Women Voters and four top women business owners. It’s a high quality one-hour film, first shown on public television. Don’t miss this great chance to hear the stories of the passionate and courageous women from our own state and learn about the victorious campaign for women’s voting rights here in the South.

Parking: Parking is free on Saturdays in City lots. The Market Square lot with entrances on Walnut and Wall St. will fill quickly that morning due to the Farmer's Market and Fair. The Farmer's Market starts at 9am. The State Street lot and the Walnut/Clinch lot will have spaces and are both within a short walking distance of Market Square.

Questions? Contact event coordinator Jamey Dobbs, League President, at 548-0818.

Notes from the playwright Candace Corrigan:

On Market Square in Knoxville, Tennessee stands a monument to all the Tennessee women who gave their time (and their money) in support of amending the U.S.

Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Three women, representing all three grand divisions of Tennessee, stand cast in bronze; Elizabeth Avery Meriwether, from Memphis, Tennessee, author, suffrage lecturer, and first woman to vote in Tennessee, Lizzie Crozier French, from Knoxville, Tennessee, teacher, activist, and first woman to address the Tennessee State Bar association on the subject of women's rights, and Anne Dallas Dudley, socialite, and nationally recognized suffragist from Nashville, Tennessee.

On August 7, 2010 these women will be joined by National Woman's Party's founder, Alice Paul, in a new play entitled "A Vote of Her Own", a short one act play based on all of these women's writings and speeches. "It will feature excerpts of speeches and interviews of all four of these women and will also feature music of the suffrage movement, and some of it is quite funny. The actresses will be in period costume, and, in effect, will be stepping out of the statue, and coming to life," says Candace Corrigan, playwright and writer/producer for the public television special 'How Southern Women Won the Vote'. Candace says it will be very entertaining, as well as inspiring.

The Diary Project

The Diary Project - this is a super neat website and project you should check out. I put a little info from their website below...

The Diary Project, a non-profit organization, is a global multimedia resource that encourages teens to write about their day-to-day experiences growing up. The nucleus of the project is this website. We invite you to write freely and often about anything that is on your mind, just as you would in your own journal. Our goal is to encourage communication amongst teens of all cultures and backgrounds, provide peer-to-peer support, stimulate discussion, and generate feedback that can help ease some of the concerns encountered along the way.

The Diary Project is a site where teens can share their innermost secrets and feelings with honesty, openness and connectedness - anonymously. It's a place where you can celebrate victories, share insights and inspire others to do the same. The site provides an impartial audience that can acknowledge and understand your feelings. It encourages self-expression, as well as listening. We hope that you will use this site as a means of positive interaction with other teens and a source of comfort for yourselves. We look forward to hearing from you.
There are thousands of entries in 24 categories posted on the site. Our purpose is to encourage essential dialogue and communication among teens and for them to know they are not alone in the challenges they are experiencing throughout adolescence.

The site is monitored by a team that includes adults and teens who consistently read all the material that is sent to The Diary Project website. The material on this site is not appropriate for adolescents below the age of 13. Please see the "submit entry" page for guidelines and protocol of the site.

Her Last Call From a new Cell Phone...

Something to think about...

Some times only a picture can get our attention!

Her last call from a new cell phone...

Do you see the motorcycle?

The Honda crotch rocket rider was traveling at approximately 85 mph.. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the motorcycle. The riders reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident.
The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them.
The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.

All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department..
Pass this on to car drivers or soon to be new drivers, or new motorcycle owners AND ESPECIALLY EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO HAS A CELL PHONE!!!!!

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Save a life…

Stop talking on Cell phones and Texting while trying to drive.

The life you save may be your own..... or mine...

Girls in Action: Helping Girls With Disabilities Feel ‘Amazing’

Anyone can do something to make the world a better place. Check out this amazing Girls in Action story/interview about a 16 year old girl changing the world...

Jordan Somer, 16, is changing the world through the Miss Amazing Pageant for girls and young women with disabilities. Teen Voices chatted with Jordan about her reasons for starting the pageant, what it does for the girls who participate, and how she manages to get everything done!

Teen Voices: Tell us about the Miss Amazing Pageant!

Jordan Somer: The Miss Amazing Pageant is meant to raise confidence and self-esteem in girls and young women with disabilities from ages five to 35. We do this to improve their skills. They learn how to do a personal interview, they get on stage and introduce themselves, they model their evening wear, and they do a talent if they want to. They do all this stuff, and through this, they learn to believe in themselves. They know that they can do what they want to do.

TV: How long have you been doing this?

Jordan: The first Miss Amazing Pageant was in 2007, so I’m planning the fourth annual pageant in November 2010.

TV: So what inspired you to start the Miss Amazing Pageant?

Jordan: I really liked helping out at the Special Olympics, and I was really passionate about pageants, so I combined those two things. I thought, if I can get on stage and I can do all the pageant stuff, then why can’t girls with disabilities? And I found that these girls really didn’t have the chance. Girls with disabilities didn’t have any opportunity to be in pageants. I thought it would be a good idea to start a pageant for them.

TV: Could you tell me more about your opinion of what a traditional pageant is and how the Miss Amazing Pageant is different?

Jordan: There’s a big difference between a beauty pageant and a scholarship pageant. In a beauty pageant they judge everything off your looks and probably a little off personality as well (I don’t really do those). Scholarship pageants are more about your self-confidence and the way you present yourself in an interview, and your public speaking skills and scholastic achievements. That is the type of pageant I compete in.

The Miss Amazing Pageant is very similar to the pageants I compete in, because they do judge on self-esteem and confidence and how the judges think that the girls believe in themselves. And I mean, that’s a learning process. Not every girl is just going to go in there and believe in themselves, but they can see year by year that their self-esteem starts increasing and they get used to talking to people. I think that’s what we judge on and it’s just great to see them improve their skills year after year.

TV: Alright, so could you tell us a little more about your role? What do you do in preparation for this and during the pageant?

Jordan: It’s quite crazy throughout the year; I have a lot of support from my mom, but I pretty much do it all. I run the event completely run through donations, so I have to get donations for the area and the space we’re going to use and I usually provide lunch for the girls.

TV: Do you make the lunches or do you get people to donate?

Jordan: Well, one year we just got people to donate bread and meat and we made sandwiches. This year, we got a dollar donation. And other donations we get are trophies that we give to each girl. Those are actually recycled because [there are] a lot of pageants with trophies, so we get trophies to be recycled. I just tear the plates off the old ones and put new ones on that say “Miss Amazing.”

The rest of it is just finding judges, making the program books to give to everyone in the audience. As far as getting contestants I do a lot of word-of-mouth, and I have newspaper articles that have been written. The Ollie Webb Foundation helps families of people with disabilities, and they have helped me out a lot. They have a lot of contacts, so I go through that organization and also the Arts of Nebraska help me out. So I cover promotion, I cover donations…I’m not sure what else to say to explain my role. It’s just about everything, the whole operation; I need volunteers, I have to find them as well.

TV: That’s a lot of work!

Jordan: Oh yeah, definitely, but I have a whole year.
TV: And what’s your favorite part of the pageant?

Jordan: It’s so much work for only one day, but probably more than anything, I just feel exactly where I want to be in my life right then. That’s the feeling I have, that this is what I want to do with my life. I love giving back, and I think that’s the meaning of my life, to make a positive difference in the world. We all affect each other so much, and that’s how I want to affect people. That’s just how I feel, that’s my favorite part. I finally get that feeling of satisfaction.

TV: Can you tell us about any one or two contestants who have particularly inspired you?

Jordan: One girl has competed for the past three years. She always sings and dances for talent and every time she sees me, she runs up and hugs me and says, “Hey there, Jordan!” She’s just so enthusiastic about everything, and everything that she does, in all the events, and in life in general. She’s so enthusiastic and so positive about everything.

TV: So like you said, this will be your fourth year running. How has the pageant changed over the past four years.

Jordan: The first year was definitely more low-key, since I was just starting the organization. I think one of the biggest things was the first year, my mom helped me a lot and I think just over time the program started to get a lot of recognition and it was all getting thrown at me, like, “Jordan Somer did this,” and it’s true, I did come up with the idea, I did help her a lot, but over the years I started taking the reins of it more, because I do feel that if I’m getting all the credit, I’m going to be doing all the work. When I needed my mom’s help on small things I would go to her.

The venue has also improved. The first year, the pageant was at a church center and then the year after that was at Plattsmouth High School, and then last November, it was at the Holiday Inn Convention Center which was huge. We have dance competitions there, it was an awesome venue and they have actually donated the space last year and they’re donating it this year, too, so I hope to keep them on board! The staff is awesome, the girls love getting a room for the night and going to the water park that’s downstairs, it’s so much fun. That’s one thing that’s definitely improved.

TV: Well that sounds really great, who knows, maybe you can double your numbers again this year, who knows? So you take donations when people come to the pageant?

Jordan: Yes. The only cost for the girls to compete in the pageant is four cans of food, but there are also girls who just bring in bags of food just to donate. Each year, we collect around 250 to 300 pounds of food. It’s kind of a three-in-one, because we change the lives of the girls in the Miss Amazing Pageant through the experience, we get the cans of food from the contestants, and also, the only price to go to the final show is $10 for the tickets. All the money we raise is donated to organizations around the community, and we also keep a little bit for the next year’s pageant.

TV: What advice would you give to teen girls who want to become more involved in their community or even start a project of their own?

Jordan: I would say that first you need to find something that absolutely inspires you. If you just try to start an organization or start a project and you’re just like “Eh, it’s OK,” then it’s not going to go well. You’re not going to want to find time to get it done, you’re not going to want to really come out with a good project so find something that either has happened in your life that has really affected you or something that you’ve seen that’s made a difference in your life and then you can branch off of that. First is inspiration, then after that it’s all planning and it’s all having that determination to get it done. And that after all that hard work, it definitely comes down to something that will change your life and it will open so many doors of opportunity. Through the Miss Amazing Pageant, which I kind of started by accident, I’ve won awards and scholarships. I never went out thinking, “Oh, I want this for my resume or scholarship.” First, you just have to find something you’re passionate about.
